The Jeep Cherokee fits in the compact crossover market, but it sets itself apart from others with its off-road chops and towing power. For the 2021 model year, the Cherokee gains some standard safety systems, and some previously optional features such as heated exterior mirrors and one-touch up and down front windows now come standard. A new 80th Anniversary Edition also arrives for 2021.

Trim Levels (Exterior)

vThe base Cherokee is the Latitude. It comes with 17-inch alloy wheels and has LED headlights, daytime running lights, roof rails, and heated side exterior mirrors. Step up to the Latitude Plus for fog lights and a windshield de-icer or to the Latitude Lux for upgrades in the cabin. The Limited adds 18-inch wheels, a power liftgate, and a panoramic sunroof. A hands-free liftgate is optional for most trims, and every model can get the trailer tow package. The off-road-ready Trailhawk comes with all-terrain tires, 17-inch alloy wheels, an off-road suspension, and skid plates.

Engine (Power)

The standard engine for the 2021 Cherokee is a 2.4-liter four-cylinder gas engine that makes 180 horsepower. The Latitude Lux, Limited, and Trailhawk all get a 3.2-liter V-6 with 271 horsepower, and a turbo 2.0-liter four-cylinder is optional for the Latitude Lux and Limited. This engine generates 270 horsepower.

Performance

The Cherokee's base engine has plenty of power for around town, but the V-6 and the turbo-four give the SUV the extra push many drivers appreciate when passing on the highway and tackling rough roads. This SUV is one of the best off-road vehicles in its class and offers three different four-wheel drive systems, and each one offers Selec-Terrain traction management. When equipped with a tow package and the V-6, the Cherokee can pull up to 4,500 pounds. This is more than any other compact SUV in its class.

Interior

There's room for five in the Cherokee with comfortable seats for everyone. Standard features include cloth upholstery, 60/40-split rear seats, and air conditioning. A heated steering wheel and power-adjustable driver's seat come in the Latitude Plus. Nappa leather upholstery comes in the Latitude Lux, which also comes with a power-adjustable passenger seat. The Limited adds driver's seat memory settings, and heated rear seats are available, along with ventilated front seats. Technology features in the Cherokee start with a 7-inch touch screen, two USB ports, a six-speaker stereo system, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a 12-volt power outlet. Moving up through the trims adds more tech, such as rear-seat USB charging ports and upgraded Alpine stereo, an 8.4-inch touch screen, and satellite radio. An integrated navigation system is optional as part of the Elite Package, and this is available for several of the trims.

Safety Features

Every 2021 Jeep Cherokee comes standard with several driver aids. These include a blind-spot monitor, rear cross-traffic alert, forward collision warning with mitigation, and a lane-keeping assist system. The Latitude Plus adds rear automatic braking, and the Limited comes with adaptive cruise control. Other standard features for the Cherokee include trailer sway control, a full suite of air bags, and a rearview camera.
