Tranquil autumn photos with leaves on the ground and bare-naked trees in the background.Durand, MI, might be a small city, but when it comes to fun, there are loads of invigorating outdoor activities that will get you off the couch and into the fresh air. So, grab your hiking boots, fishing tackle, mountain bike, and picnic basket, and head out for a day of outdoor adventure.

1. Camping in Sleepy Hollow State Park

Treat yourself to a camping adventure in Sleepy Hollow State Park and enjoy 2,600 acres of outdoor fun and excitement throughout the year. You can camp out on the river under the trees at a tent or RV campsite with water, electricity, a picnic table, a fire ring, and Wi-Fi close to restrooms with showers. Your pooch is also welcome, and there is even an enclosed dog run where he can stretch his legs off-leash.

Camping in Sleepy Hollow State Park provides access to the hiking, biking, and horseback riding trails, and paddling, boating, and fishing in Lake Ovid and the Little Maple River. In winter, the park is a popular cross-country skiing and snowshoeing destination. The disc golf course is also open throughout the year.

2. Fishing in Lake Ovid

Grab your fishing tackle and head out to the 410-acre Lake Ovid in the Sleepy Hollow State Park for a day of shore or boat fishing. The lake is teeming with an array of fish species and is one of the most popular fishing lakes in the region. Anglers reel in largemouth, smallmouth, and rock bass, bluegill, muskie, sunfish, crappie, bullhead, and perch. There are two fishing piers and a boat launch.

3. Hiking and Biking in the Brighton State Recreation Area

The picturesque hills and lakes in the 4,947-acre Brighton State Recreation Area make it the ideal destination for hikers and mountain bikers. Three hiking trails and six mountain biking trails wind through oak forests, grassy marshes, and dense swamp timber. Here you can explore the natural environment on easy, moderate, and advanced trails suitable for beginner to experienced hikers and bikers.

The hiking trails include the one-mile Bishop Lake Trail, the two-mile Kahchin Trail, and the six-mile Penosha Trail. The two-mile Appleton Mountain Biking Trail is suitable for beginners, the seven-mile Murray Lake Trail for intermediate riders, and the seven-mile Torn Shirt Trail for advanced riders. The other mountain biking trails are looped extensions between one and two miles long with technical sections.
